Video: This is the LG Velvet

LG just published a video teaser of its upcoming “mass-market flagship,” the LG Velvet.

The video shows a brand-new design language that includes a fresh take on the camera module. Instead of massive camera modules like we’ve seen on the Galaxy S20 Plus and Huawei P40 Pro, the Velvet opts for an inverted teardrop design. It looks q30uite fresh.

We also get a good look at the color options the LG Velvet will be available in, including some attractive gradient colorways.

LG confirms in the video earlier rumors that the Velvet will be powered by the Snapdragon 765G, rather than the top-of-the-line Snapdragon 865. Qualcomm’s flagship chip is notoriously expensive this year, and that’s one of the main reason flagship phones have seen a steep price increase. The 765G is still a high-end 5G SoC, but it’s slightly less powerful than the 865, and of course, cheaper. It looks like LG is looking to differentiate the Velvet through a lower price tag. Another manufacturer that’s rumored to adopt the Snapdragon 765G for its 2020 phones is Google.

The LG Velvet will be the first phone in LG’s rebooted strategy. Its name is supposed to show a clear departure from the old way of doing things, which has caused 20 consecutive quarters of losses to LG’s mobile unit.

What do you think of this design?
