2019 has been a big year for Netflix, which upped its content budget from $12 billion to $15 billion. So far, we’ve seen some great hits like the medical investigation series Diagnosed, an eerily accurate representation of serial killer interviews in Mindhunters, the epic finale to Orange is the New Black, a riveting new season of Spanish crime thriller Money Heist, and much more. So what does the last month of the year have in store? While lots of binge-worthy content is streaming as we speak, Netflix is yet to cross off some big tickets items from its 2019 roster. Here’s a list of the best upcoming Netflix movies and shows that will close out 2019 with a bang.
Upcoming Netflix shows and movies:
Editor’s Note: We’ll update this list of upcoming Netflix shows and movies regularly as new ones are announced.
1. V Wars
A modified virus is causing DNA transformations and turning the American people into Vampires. It’s up to one Dr. Luther Swann (Ian Somerhalder) to stop this wild epidemic making murderers out of everyone. As the disease spreads, Swann’s best friend becomes the leader of the vampires and all hell breaks loose as more and more people are turned. V Wars is inspired by the comic book of Jonathan Maberry and Alan Robinson. The series premiers on Netflix on December 5.
2. A Christmas Prince: The Royal Baby
It’s Christmas time in Aldovia again. If you haven’t seen the first two movies, you can catch all three of them together this holiday season. This cheery romantic comedy follows the love story of a prince and a journalist, both from different lands. The first movie was about how they met, while the second one saw them getting hitched. This time around, the royal couple have a baby on the way. The movie series is just the right amount of cheesy pick-me-up you need during the holidays. A Christmas Prince: The Royal Baby premiers on Netflix on December 5.
3. The Confession Killer
This five-part docuseries explores the life of one of America’s most prolific serial killers — or so it was believed at the time. Henry Lee Lucas confessed to hundreds of murders resulting in a death penalty. However, an investigation later discovered that it was impossible for him to have committed all of those crimes. Directed by Oscar nominee Robert Kenner (Food, Inc.) and Taki Oldham, The Confession Killer hits Netflix on December 6.
4. Marriage Story
Marriage Story is Academy Award-nominated filmmaker Noah Baumbach’s divorce drama starring Scarlett Johansson and Adam Driver. The film’s got Laura Dern, Alan Alda, and Ray Liotta as co-stars. The story revolves around a theater director (Driver) and his actress wife (Johansson). As circumstances put the couple in different cities, their marriage crumbles further and they file for divorce. What follows is a messy custody battle, until the couple decides to take matters in their own hands. Marriage Story has already had a limited theatrical release. It is due for a wide release on Netflix on December 6.
5. 6 Underground
From the maker of Armageddon, Transformers, Pearl Harbor, and many other Hollywood hits comes this action-packed thriller. Six people are given a chance to erase themselves from existence and change their future. This team of six is lead by a tech billionaire (Ryan Reynolds), and together they set out on a mission to eliminate some of the most evil people in the world. This is a big release for Netflix and it comes out on December 13.
6. The Witcher (Season 1)
One of the most hotly anticipated titles of the year, The Witcher is an upcoming fantasy series on Netflix starring Henry Cavill (Superman) in the lead role of monster hunter, a.k.a. The Witcher. The eight-part series is based on Andrzej Sapowski’s popular novel series by the same name. The Witchers are beast hunters who develop superpowers at an early age in life. These abilities help them bring monsters to heel. But, are monsters really as bad as humans? Some of you may have even played CD Projekt Red’s game by the same name. The Witcher releases on Netflix just before Christmas on December 20. It’s certainly one of the most exciting upcoming Netflix shows we hope to close out the year with.
7. The Two Popes
According to Netflix’s summary of the film, the Two Popes “captures the historic turning point for the Catholic Church” when Pope Benedict XVI met with Pope Francis. The title alone is enough to arouse curiosity about how that meet really went down. It’s a story about traditional versus modern approaches to religion. While Pope Benedict prefers the more orthodox approach, Pope Francis has a more welcoming stance. The Two Popes will release on Netflix on December 20. This upcoming Netflix movie will also see a theatrical release.
8. Lost In Space 2
The Robinsons are back for another entertaining space odyssey. This is the second installment of the family-focused sci-fi series, which released on Netflix last April. This year, the adventure continues as the family searches for their lost robot. Meanwhile, a series of incredible new threats and unexpected discoveries emerge as they try and find safe passage to Alpha Centauri. Starring Molly Parker, Toby Stephens, Mina Sundwall, Taylor Russell, Maxwell Jenkins, and Brian Steele, Lost In Space 2 releases on December 24.
These are the best upcoming Netflix shows and movies to look forward to in our opinion. We’ll update this post with new titles once we know about them.
