Facebook-owned messaging platform WhatsApp has been relentlessly trying to stop spreading misinformation or fake news across its platform in recent weeks. Last week, the messaging service, which has 200 million active monthly users had introduced a new feature called Checkpoint Tipline. This feature unveiled in India can be added to the WhatsApp chats and any misinformation received or forwarded can be shared to the Tipline, wherein it utilizes third-party organization to verify and showcase the users the authenticity of the message that has been shared.
And, recently WhatsApp had also introduced a new privacy feature for the Groups in the Privacy settings within the app. The feature is meant to be giving control to its users within the messaging platform on whether they want to be added to a particular group or not. Earlier, any user could add any person or a number without the users’ consent. While respecting the users’ consent is surely commendable for WhatsApp, amid this the company has been appeared testing another new feature to tackle fake news that spreads via forwarded messages.
According to the latest findings of WhatsApp beta version by WABetaInfo, it appears WhatsApp is working on a new feature to stop Frequently Forwarded Messages in Groups. This new feature is an extension to the Forwarding Info feature, which the company had introduced in the 2.19.80 update, which lets users know how many times a message has been forwarded. And, the new feature that is currently being tested allows users to identify if a message is frequently forwarded and will enable users to prevent in sending them.
This appears to be in the testing phase yet in the latest 2.19.97 beta update of WhatsApp. The report also suggests that within the Group settings. After the update finishes testing and rolls out officially, the Group Admins then have the option to allow or reject the frequently forwarded messages from participants within the group. Earlier, WhatsApp had restricted a message to be forwarded to not more than five times and now preventing the frequent forwarded messages to be blocked within the groups’ hints how persistent WhatsApp is becoming to tackle fake news especially in countries like India, which is also ahead of elections this week.
