As announced earlier, Nubia has officially launched its Alpha smartwatch today in China. Though the company first showcased the Nubia Alpha at the CES 2019, it was officially announced at the MWC 2019. As of now, the Nubia Alpha will be sold only in the Chinese market. However, the company already mentioned to sell this in other foreign markets across Asia, Europe and North America. The Nubia Alpha with eSIM will be exclusive to the Chinese market.
The foreign markets will only be getting the Bluetooth variant. Nubia partnered with Visionox to manufacture the flexible display which is made up of 11 layers. It is a 4.01-inch flexible OLED display with 960 by 192 pixels resolution. Under the hood is the Qualcomm Snapdragon Wear 2100 SoC coupled with 1GB of RAM. There is also 8GB of onboard storage for installing apps and storing offline music. The smartwatch runs on a custom OS called Alpha OS (αOS) which brings a lot of custom features.
It packs a 500mAh battery which can last for a day or two depending on the usage and can be charged using the magnetic pins on the back. The thick bezels on the either side of the display comes with sensors. One is the 5MP camera with 82-degree wide-angle view and f/2.2 aperture. On the other side is the sensor to track air gestures. The user can simply wave on top of the smartwatch to control it. With the eSIM technology, the smartwatch also gets 4G LTE connectivity.
There is also a built-in GPS and heart rate monitor for tracking fitness related activities. In China, the Nubia Alpha can also be used for making contact-less payments. The smartwatch lacks any IP certification, but at least it is splash proof. Coming to the pricing, the Nubia Alpha with eSIM support is priced at CNY 3499 (approx USD 520 / INR 36,250). There is also a 18K Gold variant which comes with price tag of CNY 4499 (approx USD 670 / INR 46,500). It will be available starting April 10th in China.
