Apple’s predominant chipset maker on its iPhones and iPads, TSMC (Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company) has announced its new 5nm chipset design infrastructure for high-end phones in 2020. With Apple’s current A12 Bionic chipset, which is the TSMC’s latest chipset is built on 7nm architecture. Other well-known chipset makers that make 7nm chips include – Huawei’s HiSilicon Kirin 980 SoC and the latest Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 855 SoC had made their way with their newest flagships phones released late last year and early 2019 as well.
While the 7nm chipsets entered smartphones late last year, TSMC has announced its plans for the future, the company that manufactures Apple’s A12 Bionic SoC and also for the upcoming iPhones’ A13 chipset has now announced its new chipsets for 2020. The new SoC is said to be built on 5nm architecture, and the company claims that it can supposedly offer a new level of performance and power optimizations for the high-end phones that will come next year. In comparison with the current 7nm based SoC, the new 5nm chipset will deliver 1.8x logic density and 15% speed gain on ARM Cortex-A72 core alongside the superior SRAM and analog area reduction enabled by the processor architecture.
What this suggests us is that since TSMC has been the sole supplier for Apple with its powerful A series chipset, which is currently 7nm based in iPhones that include – iPhone XS, XS Max, and the iPhone XR, we can expect the new 5nm to be featured in 2020 iPhones. Further, the 5nm based chipset is said to be targeting the high-growth 5G and AI markets in the future and henceforth we can expect the 5G-enabled iPhone only by 2020 with Intel modem, most likely and certainly not in 2019. Stay tuned to PhoneRadar for more such interesting updates.
