LG G8 ThinQ to pack OLED screen that can be used as an amplifier

The LG G8 ThinQ. LG Newsroom

We’ve seen loads of rumors regarding the LG G8 ThinQ in the past few months, and so-called Sound On Display technology was one of these claimed features. Now, the Korean company has officially announced the tech, calling it Crystal Sound OLED (CSO).

According to a post on the LG Newsroom, the LG G8 ThinQ will feature the technology, which essentially turns the phone’s screen into an amplifier.

“Developed in-house by LG, CSO repurposes the OLED display as a diaphragm, vibrating the entire surface to produce sound with impressive volume,” reads an excerpt of the post. “And because LG’s unique technology takes advantage of the entire display, CSO also improves clarity, making voices easier to discern and subtle musical notes more noticeable.”

The Korean brand says stereo playback is also possible by using the top section of the display in conjunction with the bottom-firing speaker. It says the solution also enables a “clean, minimalist look,” but leaked images suggest the phone will still have a noticeable notch.

The post (and Crystal Sound OLED name) confirms that the LG G8 ThinQ will ship with an OLED screen, making for a change from previous G-series smartphones. With the exception of the G Flex range, all of the company’s G-series flagships have used LCD technology.

LG also revealed a few more audio-related features for the new phone, such as Quad DAC hardware, a Boombox Speaker, and MQA support. And with last week’s official confirmation of a 3D ToF camera on the front, the LG G8 ThinQ is looking like a technologically impressive device.
