A new feature for Android Pie users encrypts data backed up in the cloud. The randomly generated decryption key is encrypted using the user's Passcode/PIN/pattern. Since Google doesn't know this information, no one inside the company will have access to backed up data stored in the cloud. Google will automatically backup SMS messages on Nexus and Pixel devices, while call history is automatically stored in the cloud on other Android devices.
